Late eighteenth century. After a runaway peasant tries to jump from a roof with homemade wings, villagers begin to guard their customs with new severity: the wings are burned, a travelling performer is killed, and twin sisters are separated when one is blamed for the other’s illness. Refusing guilt, the girl secretly watches the experiments in flight.
